Monument in memory of Donald Cargill
Donald Cargill, a Presbyterian minister and Covenanter, was born in Rattray. During the latter half of Charles II’s reign, Presbyterianism was outlawed by the Scottish Parliament, and Donald Cargill escaped military enforcers by jumping a narrow part of the River Ericht, now known as Cargill’s Leap. He was eventually captured in 1681 and taken to Edinburgh where he was found guilty of treason and executed. This commemorative cairn monument is located in a field outside Rattray.
